I Have A Confession… I Hate Wheat

I didn’t know that a person could hate a plant. I mean I could sympathize with someone who fell on a cactus and hated cactuses from that point on.

Wheat and I used to be friends. I like bread, I like beer, so what’s not to love about wheat?

About a year ago my daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. And now, wheat has become my plant nemesis.

Parenting is never easy. Parenting a child that has a disease associated with something you consume on a daily bases, guys, its hard. And, it’s ridiculously expensive.

Cooking dinner or grabbing a quick lunch is now complicated. There are a million things that contain wheat and I would never have known before she was diagnosed. It’s in meat(gross I know), cheese, gum, bread, condiments, candy canes; and it’s even in toothpaste, chapstick, and lipstick.

Can’t a parent ever get a break?

Now, because of wheat, I hate cooking, eating out, grocery shopping, trying to find chapstick or even toothpaste. A celiac diet isn’t ideal for people who do not have the disease; Because of that, each meal made is in multiples. For instance, a spaghetti dinner uses multiple pots, plates, stirring spoons and even separate colanders(remember you can’t have cross-contamination). And yet the smallest mistake means that you can’t feed it to your child.

I can’t even believe how one little plant has affected our lives so adversely. It would have been far easier(and more painful; I suppose) to hate a cactus.

Wheat, I hate you.
